Iluminado Tours is based in Mérida, capital of the State of Yucatán, Mexico. Merida was founded in 1542 by Francisco de Montejo on the site of a major Maya settlement called ICH KAAN ZI HO. For the first three hundred years, Merida took its orders directly from Spain, not Mexico City, which helped give the Yucatán its distinct cultural identity. In the mid 16th Century, the Spanish arrived and, 500 years later, the Maya are still here. They are the largest surviving indigenous population in the Americas. Nearly everything you see or experience in the Yucatán is influenced by their presence. That is why it is different that the rest of Mexico.
